Visual Aid 3.2.1: Areas covered by Labour Law
The Bangladesh Labour Law covers:
·        Appointment procedures and conditions
·        Termination of employment (by employer and by worker)
·        Disciplinary matters/ punishment for conviction and misconduct
·        Grievance procedures
·        Compulsory wages and benefits, payment procedure
·        Workers’ welfare including maternity Leave
·        Workplace hygiene and safety
·        Industrial relations and dialogue between worker and management
·        Responsibilities of employees and employers

Ask the participants – “Suppose you have been selected for a job, what is the first thing you should expect from the employer?”
Introduce contract: also highlight that in Bangladesh there are various contract types. Ask trainees about types of contracts. Discuss informal types of contracts and formalised contracts. Also refer to the Labour Law, that in principle written contracts should be given in all cases.

What is an employment contract?
·       Lays out binding terms and conditions of employment between an employee and an employer.
·       Can be oral and written.
·       According to Labour Law, contract should be in writing and signed by both parties.

Introduce the importance of an appointment letter.
