Visual Aid 1.4.1:  What is a problem?
A Problem is

-          The gap between an actual state and the desired state (or prescribed, expected) state
Problem = Want/Should - Have

Discuss what problems could be at work. Ask the trainees to highlight problems and group the same into 3 types. Visualise the same and ask trainees to give examples

Some problem areas at work
-          Quality problem: WANT 5% but HAVE 10% rejects
-          Output problem: WANT 100 but HAVE 80 pieces per day produced.
-          Consistency problem: WANT 10% but have 20% fluctuation from day to day
-          Customer satisfaction problem: have many complaints and returns  of products

Explain the importance of problem solving                             10 Min

Ask “When you can identify and classify problems what should you do?” Wait for a response that says that problem has to be solved. Then explain the importance of problem solving using the following slide or flip chart.

Problem Solving:
-          process of working through causes to reach a solution
-          is a skill: a good problem solver is always in demand!
-          overcomes barriers and obstacles
-          reaches a common understanding of problem
-          once solved, problems do not come back
