Story of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Captain of
Bangladesh Cricket Team
Mashrafe
Bin Mortaza, popularly known as “Narail Express”, is considered as one of the
most extraordinary cricketer in the history of Bangladesh cricket. He is not
only the most successful captain and a legendary bowler but also a symbol of
determination, confidence and inspiration for thousands of young cricketers in
Bangladesh. Like every other successful man, his journey was never easy. Today
we will explore the life of this cricket icon and reveal the key of his
achievements in life.
Early Life
Mortaza
was born on 5 October 1983 in Narail, a district in south-west part of
Bangladesh. His father was a football player who had several injuries while
playing and eventually had to give up football. Young Mortaza was interested in
cricket, football, badminton and other sports more than his studies. Among
those sports, he was always passionate about cricket. After playing school
cricket, he moved to Dhaka for better opportunities and was selected for the
National Under-17 then Under 19 team. At the age of 20, on the basis of his
satisfactory performance, he got the chance to play for Bangladesh National
cricket team.
Struggle (life)
Mortaza
made his international debut in 2001. It was only his fifth test match, when he
first got injured against Pakistan in January 2002. Since then he has lived a
story of frequent injuries and comebacks. He played only 12 test matches in the
first 3 years of his international career and everyone thought that his cricket
career would be over. He had several surgeries in both knees and ankles and was
out of the team most of the time of his career. He had 12 injuries and 7 major
surgeries in his 15-year long cricket career. Yet every time he came back stronger
than ever before, performing better eventually. Due to frequent injuries he had
to make some adjustments, like changing his bowling action, cutting down pace
and stopping test cricket. However, he continued to play and excel in the
limited-overs’ cricket.
Captain (He made a confident team)
In July
2009, Mortaza was appointed as captain of Bangladesh cricket team for the first
time but he could not continue because of persisting injuries and eventually
lost his captaincy in February 2010. In 2014, when the Bangladesh cricket team
was performing very poorly in international cricket and failed to register a
win in 13 games through 2014, Mortaza was asked to take over the role as a
captain of the Bangladesh cricket team with just a few months left for the
World Cup. The team was inconsistent and lacked confidence and morale. However,
everything has changed magically under his leadership. He increased the
confidence among the players through hard work, discipline, courage and finally
by asking them to play fearless cricket.
Winning matches
Under
his leadership in 2015 Bangladesh cricket witnessed the most successful year in
history. Bangladesh has won ODI series at home against Pakistan, India, South
Africa, and twice against Zimbabwe, and got to the knockout stage of the World
Cup for the first time in history.
