Possible feedback: Fareeda
wants Ahmad to be in time and come back for dinner and orders him to do so.
Ahmad avoids a clear answer and does not make a commitment. Has Fareeda achieved
what she wanted to achieve? Has Ahmad provided the answer he actually wanted to
tell? How could she and how could Ahmad communicate better so that both needs
are met?
Ask trainees whether they have experienced similar situations. Further
explore that there are various forms to communicate messages, feelings and
information. Ask trainees about other ways how we communicate.
Note down the inputs and highlight that there are verbal and nonverbal
ways of communicating.
Exercise: Role
Play: Make groups, three trainees
in each group. Invite two members of each group to greet each other (saying
good morning/ good afternoon. How are you?). Encourage them to greet each other
in a number of ways (sad, enthusiastically, aggressively, kind, distanced).
Third member of each group will observe and note. They will use different
gestures, tone, shaking hands etc.
After the role play ask the participants to
take their seats and start discussing the verbal part and non-verbal parts when
greeting. Help participants to recognise different nonverbal parts and their
impact. Then establish the two categories of non-verbal communication by
explaining visual aid.
