Visual Aid 1.3.7: Communication Barriers

Visual Aid 1.3.7: Communication Barriers
Barriers in Communication as result of
-          Jargon: Over-complicated, unfamiliar language
-          Lack of interest
-          Disrespect
-          Aggression and fear
-          Threatening
-          Anger, shouting at each other
-          Distractions
-          Differences in perception and viewpoint
-          Hearing problems or speech difficulties
-          Criticising (verbally and non-verbally)
-          Cultural differences
-          Language differences and unfamiliar accents
-          Expectations and prejudices, which may lead to false assumptions
-          People being hurt, intimidated and withdrawing
Breakdown in communication can be serious!

Ask trainees which barrier will always lead to negative results.
How can one develop positive communication bridges so that barriers can be overcome? Let them reflect under which conditions communication works well.
Visual Aid 1.3.8: Communication Barriers

Possible Bridges
-          Listening well
-          Communicating clearly and respectfully
-          Making eye contact and have positive intent
-          Try and understand what other person feels
-          Clarifying messages for better understanding

Most communication includes both bridges and barriers.
Good communication depends how well we balance them.
