By setting clearly written goals, trainees can start measuring the progress. They will not lose hope and interest if they see visible progress.

SMART usually stands for:
S  Goals should pinpoint specific things.
M Be able to know when you reach a goal.
A  Be able to break a goal down into tasks.
R    Be able to achieve goals.
T     Set timelines and deadlines for goals to be met and stick to them!
With clearly written goals, you can measure progress and you feel confident!

You set your goals on a number of levels and start from the end:
Start with the big picture: what does the trainee want to achieve in 10 years?
To get there, as mentioned, we need to break this longterm goal down into smaller tangible steps and achievable goals which can be achieved within 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 5 years.
Facilitate the trainees in starting to work on how they are going to achieve these small goals. They will have to break these goals down into the following areas
1. Work: What does the trainee want to achieve at different stages?
2. Study/Learning: what skills do the trainee want at different stages?
3. Finances: How much do they need to earn? They should envisage what to buy? Are these expectations realistic and aligned with the goals for work?
4. Friends/Relationships: What social life do they want to have?
5. Family – Do they want to be a parent? If so, how are they going to be a good spouse and
