Listening is NOT hearing!

-          Listening is NOT hearing!
-          Give speaker full attention, stop doing other things
-          Appreciate the speaker’s openness to share
-          Observe body language of speaker
-          Figure out the speaker’s feelings and ask questions
-          Give feedback only when asked
-          Ask clarifying questions: “did I understand rightly…..”?
-          Use body language: lean forward, make eye contact, nod, shake head
-          Make verbal responses: mmh sounds, uh uh, go on to keep the flow
-          Do not interrupt, unless you need clarification or you need to urgently close the conversation
Listening is active: As a good listener, you should feel tired after a conversation.
Note: Positive listening shows respect towards the speaker

Reflect with the speakers, which listeners made them least comfortable. Be clear what bad listeners are doing and what feeling this creates. Highlight that this can also create barriers in communication. Also make sure and mention that trainees have only followed instructions.
