Explain the concepts of Gender and Equality

Explain the concepts of Gender and Equality            60 Min

Review the earlier session and findings. Highlight that there are severe inequalities between men and women due to misconceived perceptions and stereotypes.

Visual Aid 2.1.6: Perceptions of Men and Women
Inequalities: Is men’s work more than women’s work?
Most work is unpaid work
(Family work, housework, care work: largely done by women)
Wage Inequalities:
For the same work, women earn 75% of men.
Less Opportunities:
Women work in lower positions
Discrimination in the labour market based on whether one is born a woman is rampant

Highlight, that this is a global phenomenon. Overall women have significantly less rights and opportunities. However, many efforts are made which highlight that discrimination is illegal and against the law.

Visual Aid 2.1.7: Inequality between men and women globally
Inequalities: Is men’s work more than women’s work?
Women work 2/3 of the working hours, produce 50% of the world’s food and earn less than 10% of the world income, and own 1% of the world’s wealth.

These are inequalities which contradict the Bangladesh constitution! Continuous efforts are being made that girls have the same rights
-          to education
-          at work
-          at home!

Highlight that we want to see women in new roles, taking on responsibilities at work and at home. Men too need to redefine their roles so that gender equality can be achieved.
