Sheet for Module 2.2 Diversity and Disability inclusion
Diversity and inclusion:
Diversity is concerned
with creating an inclusive environment and practices which benefit the
organisation and those who work in and with it. It takes account of the fact
that people differ from one another in many ways. Understanding, valuing and
effectively managing these differences can result in greater participation that
can be leveraged for success at an individual, team and organisational level.
When we talk about equal opportunity and diversity, we focus on seven main areas:
.
age
.
disability
.
race/ethnicity
.
gender (which includes transgender)
.
religion/belief and culture
.
sexual orientation
.
work-life balance
Denial
of equal opportunities due to any of these would be exclusion and
discrimination.
Disability:
According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, all
citizens of the country have the right to enjoy their dignity, fundamental
human rights and have social equality. It does not give new rights to persons
with disabilities or DAPs. But the Constitution says that Bangladesh should
make sure persons with disabilities or DAPs have equal rights like everyone
else. These include the right to:
-
recognition of equal citizenship
-
proper health service
-
use sign/own language and communication
right to accessibility in community
-
use accessible transportation
-
education and training
-
discrimination free employment
opportunities
